Sports Injury Prevention

Over one million children a year are seen in the emergency department for injuries related to commonly played sports. Sports safety is the responsibility of the athlete, coach and parent. Here is how we can keep our athletes safe:

  • Always hydrate before you take part in any sport activities.
  • Wear appropriate protective gear for the activity you are taking part in.
  • If you experience concussion symptoms, discontinue participation immediately.
  • The athletic association should have someone trained in first aid, CPR, and concussion recognition.
  • Stretching before practice is a great way to prevent injuries.
  • Include time for rest to avoid overuse injury.
  • Play within your abilities.
