Learn More About Oral Immunotherapy for Food Allergies

Oral immunotherapy (OIT) is a treatment for patients with food allergies. With this treatment, the patient ingests a specific amount of protein from the allergic food over time in order to desensitize the body. The process is similar to how allergy shots allow a patient to become less allergic to environmental allergies. The goal of OIT is to achieve a level of desensitization to foods in which accidental exposures are no longer dangerous to the patient.

Toddlers to adults may be candidates for OIT, depending on allergy history and other health factors. Any patient with a food allergy, even those who have only had mild reactions in the past, could have a life-threatening reaction to food at some point in their life. OIT can help reduce this risk.

Call our clinic for more information about OIT or to schedule a consultation.
