Prepare Before Your Procedure

Welcome to our Gastro Procedure Prep page. Here, you will find all the necessary steps to prepare for your upcoming colonoscopy procedure at our clinic. These instructions are specific to our Springfield location and are designed to ensure you have a smooth and successful experience. Please read the detailed instructions and follow them carefully. If you have any questions, refer to our FAQ form, or contact your provider for further assistance.

EDG Prep

Important: read instructions two weeks before your procedure. If you do not follow the instructions you may have your procedure rescheduled.

Safety

• You must have a driver. 
• This person has to: 
  • Drive you home. 
  • Stay at clinic during procedure. 
  • Be immediately available by phone. 
  • Remain with you after your procedure for 24 hours. 
• Public transportation is allowed only if you have someone you know with you.
• Remove prior to procedure:  
  • All piercings and jewelry
  • Dentures
• Call 417-875-3760 if positive for COVID within 10 days of procedure.

Cardiac Defibrillator, Pacemaker or Cardiac Stent

• If you have had one placed after you have scheduled this procedure, call 417-875-3760 option 1, option 2.
• Must have a pacemaker/defibrillator check is required within 90 days of procedure.

 

If you need to cancel, call our office five days in advance.

Medications

Take blood pressure medication as prescribed. The day of your procedure, take your blood pressure medicine at least four hours before the procedure with a sip of water. Your procedure may be cancelled if your blood pressure is too high. 

If you are diabetic talk to the doctor who orders your medicine. You may need to change your medicine for day of procedure. 

Please get approval from your doctor to stop the medicines. If unable to stop, please call 417-875-3760 option 1, option 2.

• Stop taking the following medications five days before procedure day:
  • Aspirin (81 mg okay to continue)
  • Vitamin E, iron, fish oil, other herbals
  • Aggrenox (aspirin and Dipyridamole)
  • Brilinta (Ticagrelor)
  • Coumadin (Warfarin)
  • Effient (Prasugrel)
  • Plavix (Clopidogrel)
• Stop taking the following medications 48 hours before procedure day:
  • Eliquis (Apixaban) 
  • Pradaxa (Dabigatran) 
  • Xarelto (Rivaroxban)
• All other daily medicines not listed above can be taken with a sip of water. Take at least six hours before procedure.

Prep Instructions

Day of Procedure

Start clear liquid diet.

• Do not eat anything after midnight.
• Four hours before the procedure: 
  • Do not drink anything. 
  • Do not consume anything by mouth.
• Clear Liquid Diet (do not drink red or purple liquids):
  • Water 
  • Chicken Bouillon
  • Apple or strained fruit juices without pulp 
  • Soda, Kool-Aid, Tang, Gatorade 
  • Plain Jell-O
  • Italian ice or popsicles (no fruit bars or sherbet)
  • Tea or Coffee without milk or creamer 
  • Hard candy
    • example: Lifesavers - no gum

  • No drinks with alcohol

Miralax Prep

Prep Instructions

Seven Days Before the Procedure Day 

Stop eating nuts, seeds, corn, or popcorn. 

Buy bowel prep items over-the-counter 

• Trilyte and Reglan (prescriptions from pharmacy)
• Four - Dulcolax laxative tablets (over-the-counter)
• Two – Gas-X/Simethicone (gas relief) Extra strength chewable tablets 

Three Days Before the Procedure 

• Eat a low fiber diet. 
• Do not eat fruits, vegetables, grains, cereal or oatmeal. 
• Stop any fiber supplement or iron. 

Day Before the Procedure 

All day – Clear liquid diet.  

• Do not eat any solid foods. 
• Drink an extra 8 ounces of clear liquids every hour you are awake. 
• Make liquid prep. Mix Miralax with Gatorade until dissolved. 
  • Put in a large container/pitcher.  
  • Put in the refrigerator. 
• 4:00 p.m. - Take 4 Dulcolax tablets.  
  • Keep drinking clear liquid diet.  
• 6:00 p.m. – Start drinking liquid prep.  
  • Drink 8 ounces of the liquid prep every 15 minutes over one-two hours. Only drink half at this time.  
  • Keep drinking clear liquid diet until you go to bed.
  • Stool should be clear to yellow.

    • 8 ounces every 15 min every one-two hours.
    • Then take Gas-X/Simethicone tablets by mouth.
• Four hours before the procedure: 
  • Do not drink anything.
  • Do not consume anything by mouth.

• 6:00 p.m. - Take Reglan to settle your stomach.  
  • If you did not get Reglan skip this step. You may not have gotten it due to an allergy or drug interactions.
• 6:30 p.m. – Start drinking liquid prep.  
  • Drink 8 ounces of Trilyte every 10 minutes. Drink half of the solution. 
  • Put the rest in the refrigerator. 
  • If you get sick, take a 10-15 minute break. 
• Clear Liquid Diet (do not drink red or purple liquids):
  • Water

    • Drink 8 ounces every 10 minutes until it is gone.
    • Then take Gas-X/Simethicone tablets by mouth.
• Four hours before the procedure: 
  • Do not drink anything.
  • Do not consume anything by mouth.
