Patient Bill of Rights

Patients have the right to:

  • Receive treatment regardless of race, color, ancestry, religion, veteran status, national origin, age, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity or sex
  • Be treated with respect and dignity
  • Be part of making decisions about care
  • Choose persons to be part of care decisions
  • Make informed decisions about care
  • Request or refuse treatment or services
  • Have their choices honored
  • Have open communication with providers about the delivery of care and services
  • Have questions answered by providers
  • Privacy and confidentiality of their health information
  • Access to their health and billing information when asked for
  • Effective communication that considers impairments of hearing, speech, and vision and language barriers
  • Physical access to the facility regardless if there is a physical impairment
  • Be protected against all forms of abuse, discrimination or harassment
  • Be free from seclusion and restraints of any form that are not medically necessary and not be secluded or restrained as a means of coercion, discipline, convenience or retaliation by staff
  • Have a concern or grievance addressed and resolved

Patients have a responsibility to:

  • Notify staff when they believe their rights have been violated
  • Provide information for CoxHealth to bill any insurers
  • Arrange for payment of services
  • Request financial assistance
  • Honor CoxHealth policies on the use of recording devices such as cameras, video cameras, cell phones and similar devices in patient care areas
  • Be respectful to other patients, visitors and staff
  • Not engage in intentional actions that are offensive, intimidating, hostile, or discriminating
