Each quarter, CoxHealth recognizes nurses who have provided outstanding care with DAISY Awards. The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses is presented in medical facilities throughout the United States to recognize the education, training, skill and compassionate care nurses provide. Patients, their friends and families, colleagues, physicians and volunteers may nominate a nurse for the award.

Here are the fall 2022 Springfield honorees:

Lisa Potthoff, RN, Neurology

Lisa was nominated by the spouse of a patient with Parkinson’s disease. After his diagnosis, the couple had a complicated medical journey before coming to CoxHealth. The spouse says Lisa changed their perspective on life.

“Lisa was our nurse as we began our journey with CoxHealth. During our visit with the Parkinson's clinic, Lisa was kind, compassionate and she added the right amount of appropriate humor to our visit. She put us at ease by explaining the process of the program and following up with us throughout the day.

“She delivered information in a way that allowed us to trust and hang on to every word she spoke. We left feeling confident in the process, the support, and the medical decision making. In fact, my husband, who is most often very reserved, asked Lisa at the end of the visit if he could hug her. She agreed, and I confess I had to turn my head for fear of breaking down.

“Being diagnosed with such a life altering disease at such a young age left my husband feeling lost, confused and helpless. However, after spending one single day with Lisa, his outlook and entire demeanor changed. Lisa is the exact picture of the perfect nurse. She is such a gem.”

Becky Herrmann, RN, Enterostomal Clinic

Becky was nominated by a colleague who shared how Becky drove the extra mile for a patient.

“Becky has always been an outstanding nurse, but she went out of her way for a very sick patient. This patient just underwent major surgery and ended up needing urgent equipment for care. The patient was discharged, and when they arrived home, they realized they did not have a very important connector for the equipment. The patient called Becky and asked for help. After Becky ended her shift, she drove two hours in a thunderstorm to meet the patient and give them that important connector.”

Erika Gabriel, RN, East Battlefield Urgent Care Clinic

Erika was nominated by a peer for providing extra care to a patient who was about to go on a long trip.

“A patient with wet clothes and shoes entered the Battlefield Urgent Care seeking medical help and hoping to enter a shelter in a city over three hours away. This patient received treatment for his injuries, and Erika left to buy the patient brand new clothes and shoes for their bus journey. This was such a compassionate gesture and a wonderful example of going above and beyond to care for a patient during a difficult time.”
