Nursing Externship
Program Overview
The externship program provides nursing students with an exciting and rewarding opportunity to enhance their learning and technical skills. This externship is available to students who are currently enrolled in an accredited nursing education program and have completed at least two semesters of direct clinical patient care nursing experience. Applicants must also have approval from their accredited nursing program.
Areas of Study
The extern will assist, alongside the nurse preceptor, with a variety of skills, such as IV insertion, physical assessments and dressing changes.
On their own, externs are allowed to assist with:
- Ambulation
- Activities of daily living
- Bathing
- Blood glucose
- Meals
With supervision and documentation from an RN, externs are allowed to perform:
- Dressing changes
- Foley catheter insertions or removals
- IV insertions or removals
- NG insertions or removals
- Physical assessments
