From Film to Farewell: Mary George Retires after 45 years at Cox Monett Hospital
Mary George, a highly respected mammography and computed tomography (CT) technologist, is retiring from Cox Monett Hospital after 45 years of dedicated service.
Mary began her career in health care in Joplin before transitioning to Cox Monett (formerly St. Vincent’s Hospital) in 1979. She started performing mammograms in 1989, and CT scans in the mid-1990s.
“What first drew me to Monett was the reduced need for on-call shifts, as I longed to sleep in my comfortable bed,” says Mary. “I remember one night driving into the garage and seeing my husband waiting at the door to tell me I needed to return to the hospital. I put my head on the steering wheel and cried because I was so tired, but I put the car in reverse and headed back, knowing I had a patient waiting for me.”
Throughout Mary's career in radiology, she has witnessed remarkable advancements in medical imaging. She fondly recalls a time when CT images were printed on film, requiring careful handling and physical storage, which is quite different from today's instant digital imaging. Over the years, she has embraced each technological change, ensuring that her patients receive the highest quality of care.
Mary has never forgotten the many patient stories she has encountered over the years—this one just happens to be her own.
"There are many people who may not know that I had a baby the week before I had my daughter, Emily," she shares. "While holding the baby, someone asked me if I wanted a boy or a girl. I responded that I didn't care about gender; I only wanted a healthy baby. My daughter Emily has Down syndrome, but what you may not know is that the baby I was holding also had Down syndrome. I believe that God sometimes places you in situations to help prepare you for your future; I feel so richly blessed!"
Mary is known for her compassionate approach and has comforted countless patients during procedures that can often feel intimidating. Her ability to put people at ease, along with her deep technical knowledge, has made her a beloved member of the Cox Monett family.
Mary is feeling a blend of emotions as she prepares for retirement, but she can't help but feel excited about the chance to spend quality time with her family, especially with her son’s wedding on the horizon. Plus, she has two fun cruises lined up for this summer, setting the stage for a wonderful new chapter packed with adventure and unforgettable moments with her loved ones.
