A New Lease on Life: 76-year-old Finds Success in Diabetes Prevention Program

February 11, 2025 Blog

When Donna Dunn first learned about the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) at Cox Monett Hospital, she was at an appointment with her health care provider. At 76 years old, she learned that she was "borderline diabetic," which served as a wake-up call. Motivated to take charge of her health, Donna was encouraged to adopt essential lifestyle changes that could significantly improve her well-being.

At the recommendation of her provider, she enrolled in the hospital’s structured lifestyle program offered in collaboration with the University of Missouri Extension and led by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The evidence-based program aims to help individuals prevent type 2 diabetes.

“Since joining the diabetes prevention program last September, I have lost 17 pounds," says Donna. "More importantly, I have learned to pay closer attention to carbohydrates and fats, not just calories. We are given the tools to succeed, and the weight is gradually coming off.”

Donna drives from Crane to Monett every Monday evening to attend the one-hour class, where she has built friendships with other participants. She admits to having a lot of fun and enjoys laughing at herself.

"I’ve gained invaluable insights from this program, and the tools I've acquired will serve me for a lifetime," she explains. "If I find myself craving a particular food, I may choose to indulge. However, I always ensure to make the necessary adjustments the following day to stay aligned with my goals."

Bai Xiong, coordinator of the Cox Monett Diabetes Prevention Program, notes that participants like Donna are committed to making a change.

“Her success is exactly what the program is designed to achieve," says Xiong. "DPP sets participants up for success, and over a year, can help establish a routine and consistency, which then can become a habit.”

Xiong expresses a desire to see more participants in the program, which is currently available in both English and Spanish.

“If you’ve been diagnosed with prediabetes, DPP can help you take control of your life. We see participants like Donna come in feeling unsure if they really can make a difference in their health, but once they start making small changes, they realize they have more control than they thought—it’s amazing to see that transformation.”

The next DPP cohort offered in English will begin on April 1 and run until April 7, 2026. This program is offered at no cost to participants. To register, please contact bai.xiong@missouri.edu or call 417-635-4562.

What is Donna's advice to others considering the program?

“It’s never too late to take charge of your health. If I can do it at 76, anyone can—I now have the ability to prevent diabetes.”

Donna's story is a testament to the power of prevention, persistence, and the right support system—proving that success has no age limit.
