40 years since Cox Medical Center South's grand opening
40 years ago, Cox South had its grand opening.
Around 500 people attended the celebration, including patients, employees, Board of Directors members, local legislators and community friends. One particular person of note who also attended was 90-year-old Lydia “Gussie” Eagleburger. Not only did she attend the opening of Cox South, but as an 11-year-old, she also attended the dedication of Burge Hospital (as we were formerly known) when it first opened in 1906.
“This is wonderful,” she said back then to a Springfield News-Leader reporter about Cox South. “This (building) makes the first little hospital seem so small.”
Ms. Eagleburger, who was also instrumental in today’s CoxHealth Auxiliary in 1949, reminds of the deep connections and legacies within CoxHealth. Many employees and community members undoubtedly remember the day with Cox South first opened its doors. Even though it’s just a building, the hospital – along with all of our facilities – represents a desire to make a difference for the people we serve.
Thank you for the trust you place in us. We’re honored to continue serving you.
