Diabetes Education and Support Group: A Life Jacket for Those in Need

January 13, 2025

When Eric Meruelo was diagnosed with diabetes in 2018, he felt like he was swimming in the ocean without a life jacket.

“When you first hear your diagnosis, it’s a shock,” says Eric. “They said they were going to refer me to start taking classes, and that’s when I first met Dana.”

Dana Tindell, diabetes center coordinator for CoxHealth’s Center for Health Improvement, leads the Diabetes Education and Support group, which Eric credits for helping him successfully manage his diabetes.

“I gained so much from attending these meetings. Dana brings in different topics and special guests, teaches skills and there’s the group itself,” says Eric. “We’re there to support each other. It’s listening and teaching. It’s all encouraging and positive. That’s what makes it nice - we’re helping each other as well.”

One of the most impactful tools Eric learned through the group was journaling his blood sugar and food intake. This practice has helped him understand how his choices affect his blood sugar and empowered him to make more balanced decisions.

“It’s a daily regimen with hills and valleys,” says Eric. “But look at what has happened to me because of the support of the team and their resources. Anyone going through this needs the support, guidance and knowledge of those who can help.”

Thanks to the support of the group, his physician, family, and more, Eric has found a routine and lifestyle that works for him.

“With the support group, no one has to swim alone,” says Eric. “Diabetes can hit anyone, so I have been an advocate for the group, referring those with diabetes that I come in contact with to reach out to the team at the Center for Health Improvement.”

CoxHealth’s Springfield Diabetes Education and Support group meets the second Thursday of each month at 10 a.m. at the CoxHealth Center for Health Improvement. This group is open to anyone managing diabetes - whether it’s type 1, type 2, or prediabetes - and their family members or caregivers.

A virtual option is available for those unable to attend in-person. If you or a loved one are interested in learning more or attending virtually, please email Dana.Tindell@CoxHealth or call 417-269-3905.
